Black Cocoon, Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands Found after pulling away some rotting bark. Not exactly sure what it is. Seems like an (old?) cocoon. Found after pulling away some rotting bark. Not exactly sure what it is. Seems like an (old?) cocoon. Attached to it a bag of wood crumbles that reminds of material of a bag worm.

    Maybe Lymantria dispar...they have dark pupae with orange hairs.

    If not, perhaps something like Hypercompe sp.?

Lymantria dispar, the gypsy moth, are moths in the family Erebidae. Lymantria dispar covers many subspecies, subspecies identification such as L. d. dispar or L. d. japonica leaves no ambiguity in identification. Lymantria dispar subspecies have a range which covers in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America.
