  1. I don't think these two Bougainvilleas are the same species and they cannot positively be identified based on the flowers only.

Discriminating between the Bougainvillea species and hybrids isn't easy. There's a comprehensive Bougainvillea Tutorial describing the diversity of the Bougainvilleas http://www.askmar.com/Bougainvilleas/bougainvilleas.html

    1. Thanks for the research! What do you suggest to do with this ID? Remove it? Posted 12 years ago
      1. I tried to identify these Bougainvilleas when you uploaded them, but I was not sure which species they were so I only added the genus name in the title. I guess this explanation from the wiki page for Bougainvillea sums it best: Many of today's bougainvillea are the result of interbreeding among only three out of the eighteen South American species recognized by botanists. Currently, there are over 300 varieties of bougainvillea around the world. Because many of the hybrids have been crossed over several generations, it is difficult to identify their respective origins.
The problem is that even if they are somehow identified correctly, there is only one wiki page for Bougainvillea glabra, but not for the other species or hybrids. This is one of the cases for which a genus ID would be more appropriate.

        1. Thanks for the detailed answer. In this case I think a partial identification is better than none at all because of a missing Wikipedia page. With your remarks added, we have as much information in this post as can be reasonably given. Posted 12 years ago
          1. Fair enough, I'll do the same for the others. Posted 12 years ago
