Female Coyote (Canis latrans) Scent Marking
Female Coyotes come into estrus once a year, usually in late winter. During the 2-3 months prior to estrus, males and females increasingly leave scent markings. The female’s urine is often tinged with blood, which is seen in this photo. 60% to 90% of females breed each year, depending on their physical condition and the abundance of food.
Habitat: There were lots of these blood spots, along with coyote tracks and scat, in the snow; Mixed forest.
