Hope (dispairing and disappearing) I know this is somewhat on the edge of the JungleDragon rule that does not allow for pet photos, but I wanted to show this semi-wild dog in Madagascar anyway, for it being so wounded and dirty, left to fend for himself in a hopeless situation. To us personally, this photo is our symbol of Madagascar's poverty. Ambositra,Canis lupus familiaris,Domestic dog,Madagascar Click/tap to enlarge Species introCountry intro

  1. I totally agree with our placement of this photo. I can imagine the feeling you have with this shot. Quite the dispair on this ruffed up dog, it's sad eyes scanning for its master. Beautiful shot too btw. You've told it a number of times yet I still can't imagine the mentality for nature's destruction. Poverty is a mighty weapon, far past ethics and ecology. Understandable, but not understandable is the lack of support of us mgihty countries, rich among the poor.. Posted 12 years ago

  3. The longest poem quote I've ever made, a dedication to this dog,
whom, despite its facing doom, avoided entry in our deathly log.
    "
Once I was a lonely dog,
    Just looking for a home.
I had no place to go,
No one to call my own.
I wandered up and down the streets,
in rain in heat and snow.
I ate what ever I could find,
I was always on the go.
My skin would itch, my feet were sore,
    My body ached with pain.
And no one stopped to give a pat
Or to gently say my name.
I never saw a loving glance,
I was always on the run.
For people thought that hurting me
    was really lots of fun.
And then one day I heard a voice
    So gentle, kind and sweet,
And arms so soft reached down to me
And took me off my feet.
"No one again will hurt you"
    Was whispered in my ear.
"You'll have a home to call your own
where you will know no fear."
"You will be dry, you will be warm,
    you'll have enough to eat
And rest assured that when you sleep,
your dreams will all be sweet."
I was afraid I must admit,
I've lived so long in fear.
    I can't remember when I let
    A human come so near.
And as she tended to my wounds
And bathed and brushed my fur
She told me 'bout the rescue group
And what it meant to her.
She said, "We are a circle,
    A line that never ends.
And in the center there is you
    protected by new friends."

  4. Excellent photo and lovely poem.
I agree, the photo belongs here as in effect there are no 'pet dogs' in Madagascar. They are all treated the same way, left to fend for themselves and often abused. It is so sad.

    1. Thank you Claire and fully agree. I noticed there that the chickens suffer the same faith. Although they of course end up as food in most parts of the world, in Madagascar comes the added stress of traffic, animal cruelty and not to forget...big birds of prey constantly hovering over their heads, targetting them. The domestic dog, is a subspecies of the gray wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the mammalian order Carnivora. The term "domestic dog" is generally used for both domesticated and feral varieties. The dog may have been the first animal to be domesticated, and has been the most widely kept working, hunting, and pet in human history. The word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch" for the female of the species.
