
Where the Periwinkle Roam
Where the Periwinkle (Littorina littorea) Roam. An interesting story of an invasive species. Introduced to the Atlantic coast of North America, possibly by rock ballast in the mid-19th century. First recorded sighting in the East was in 1840 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is now abundant on rocky shores from New Jersey northward to Newfoundland. The common periwinkle or winkle is a species of small edible whelk or sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc that has gills and an operculum, and is classified within the family Littorinidae, the periwinkles.
