
Common Mallow 'Cheeses' - Malva sylvestris
The seed pods (pictured) of this plant are called 'cheeses" because they resemble wheels of cheese. They are edible, can be eaten raw, and have a sort of nutty flavor.
Mallow is edible and also has medicinal properties. The leaves are edible and nutritious. They have mucilaginous properties, which tend to thicken soup. Leaf or root mallow tea is used to treat coughs and stomachaches, in addition to other ailments.

"Malva sylvestris" is a species of the mallow genus "Malva" in the family of Malvaceae and is considered to be the type species for the genus.
