Catharanthus ovalis, Apocynaceae
The red colour of these flowers easily catches the eye, especially when the surrounding area is sandy, rocky and so dry. This species seems to be uncommon and rarely seen - especially in such a large clump. It was growing exposed to full sunlight but the sky was overcast when this image was taken.
Catharanthus ovalis derives its specific epithet in reference to the ovate leaves.
''Catharanthus ovalis'' is a species of flowering plant in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. It is endemic to Madagascar.
First published as a species in 1970, several subspecies or varieties have been proposed, however none are now recognized.
