Monarch Chrysalis - Danaus plexippus
At the bottom of the chrysalis is the butterfly's head and thorax. The wings are on the sides, and the abdomen is near the top. The little black thing sticking up on top is the cremaster, which is attached to the silk mat.
Habitat: When the monarch caterpillars (in a rural yard) get ready to pupate, my mother collects them and puts them in mesh enclosures (kept outdoors) where they can pupate and emerge as adults safely before being released.

The monarch butterfly or simply monarch is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species.
