Autumn Crocus - Colchicum autumnale
Grown as an ornamental, despite its toxicity...The entire plant is poisonous because it contains colchicine, which is a chemical used to induce polyploidy in plant breeding. Colchicine is also used medicinally to treat gout, and may be valuable in the treatment of some cancers.
Habitat: Rural garden

''Colchicum autumnale'', commonly known as autumn crocus, meadow saffron or naked lady, is a flower that resembles the true crocuses, but blooms in autumn. The name "naked lady" comes from the fact that the flowers emerge from the ground long after the leaves have died back.
