Bolete - Caloboletus inedulis? Habitat: Mixed forest<br />

This is a bit gnarly, but so cool! This cross-section shows so many tunnels made by fungus gnat larvae (and maybe other insects as well). You can even see some of the larvae if you look closely. Apparently, this is a tasty mushroom.<br />

    1. Someone on MO suggested that it's Caloboletus sp., which I've never heard of ;P. I'll have to do some research to figure out the species. Posted 5 years ago

''Caloboletus inedulis'' is a bolete fungus of the family Boletaceae that is native to North America. Until 2014, it was known as ''Boletus inedulis''. Recent changes in the phylogenetic framework of the Boletaceae prompted the transfer of this species, along with several other related boletes, including ''Caloboletus calopus'', to the genus ''Caloboletus''.
