Flat-backed Millipede - Apheloria virginiensis

I frequently find these millipedes dead in the autumn. This one was on the trunk of a tree.

  1. I just read they secrete cyanide when stressed!

    Note: I removed the common name "Flat-backed millipede" from the species record as this also refers to a family. Can't find a source for this common name either.

    1. Yes, they do. They don't contain a lot of cyanide though, but still best not to handle them.

''Apheloria virginiensis'' is a large North American millipede. It is reported to secrete cyanide compounds as a defense. It is recommended that one wash hands after handling this organism as the toxic compounds it secretes are poisonous and can cause extreme irritation if rubbed in the eyes.
