  1. I love the Bucconidae, the puffbird and nunbird family. A few species, typically the ones that inhabit drier forests can be quite easy to see, but many are found in the understorey or the canopy of humid forest, where they sit motionless for long periods and can be quite difficult to spot (rather like the Asian broadbills, though they aren't as brightly colored). But if you do find one, they are often very tame, and allow quite a close approach.
This is one of the few Andean species (the family reaches its highest diversity in Amazonia), photographed here at 2400 masl. I love how all its feathers are so loose on its body, making it indeed look very puffy! It sat there for about 5 minutes, vocalizing a few times, a whistle so weak I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't seen it open its beak, and then took off with a surprisingly strong and fast flight, never to be seen again.
