The parrot crossbill is a small passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae. The scientific name is from Ancient Greek. ''Loxia'' derives from ''loxos'', "crosswise", and ''pytyopsittacus'' is from ''pitus, pituos'', "pine", and ''psittakos'', "parrot''.
