Raccoon (Deceased) - Procyon lotor
While hiking with my kids this afternoon, we found this raccoon near the edge of a river. It was curled up at the base of a tree and looked like it died from natural causes and had been there a couple days. The place where we were hiking is cared for by Audubon, and we reported the dead raccoon to them. They decided to leave it there and hope to harvest the bones for educational purposes if it decays before a coyote drags the carcass away.

The raccoon, ''Procyon lotor'', also known as the common raccoon, North American raccoon, northern raccoon and colloquially as coon, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. It is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm and a body weight of 3.5 to 9 kg.
