A Male Surf Scoter in Action!

The sun was shining and this fellow was busy enough that he didn’t see me walking along the deck to take these photos.

  1. Nice series! Posted 5 years ago
    1. Thanks, Christine. It is getting more like spring here (even though we had 2 degrees of frost this morning). We saw a “V” shaped flock of noisy Trumpeter Swans fly overhead this morning. Too pretty to watch rather than run for the camera. Posted 5 years ago
      1. Yay for spring! I can relate- I saw 3 vultures tearing apart a carcass today, but didn't take a photo because I was too busy watching in fascination. It definitely wasn't pretty like your swans though ;). It was 25C here today, which is unusually warm for March, but we enjoyed the afternoon outdoors. Posted 5 years ago
        1. Good for you! No vultures here. The weather has not been warm enough to create the updrafts they need to get here. Soon, I hope. Posted 5 years ago

The surf scoter is a large sea duck, which breeds in Canada and Alaska. It is placed in the subgenus "Melanitta", along with the velvet and white-winged scoters, distinct from the subgenus "Oidemia", black and common scoters.
