Peregrine Falcon - Falco peregrinus Meet Solstice. He's a peregrine falcon that was found on the ground after being hit by a car. He suffered from a fractured wrist, and despite expert medical care from an avian vet, the wing could not be set properly for him to be able to fly. His coloring is very pale, and it is likely that he is a tundra peregrine from further north, injured during migration. He cannot be released into the wild and is now an educational ambassador for Christine’s Critters, which is a non-profit group that rehabilitates birds of prey.

The peregrine falcon was absent from Connecticut for at least 50 years. It was listed in 1992 as an endangered species on Connecticut's Endangered Species List. It was reclassified as a threatened species in 2010.
As one of the world’s most common raptors, peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) live on every continent except Antarctica. These graceful hunters are known for their impressive speed as they prey on birds in mid-flight. In fact, they are the fastest animals on the planet! Their most famous hunting technique is the dive. To pull it off, a peregrine falcon locates prey while flying high in the sky. When it finds a target, the falcon dives headfirst while folding its wings tightly against its body to form a bullet shape that reduces drag. The falcon can reach speeds of 200 mph within 8 seconds during this daredevil dive! Once it catches its prey, it will either dismember and eat it in flight, or take it to a safe place where it can pluck and eat it in peace. Not only are they common and fast, but some populations of peregrine falcons migrate from the Arctic nearly to Antarctica—a roundtrip journey of over 20,000 miles! They are such impressive birds! {Photographed in Connecticut, USA by JungleDragon moderator, Christine Young} #JungleDragon #Peregrinefalcon #Falcoperegrinus #ChristinesCritters

The peregrine falcon, also known as the peregrine, and historically as the duck hawk in North America, is a cosmopolitan bird of prey in the family Falconidae. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head.
