Goliath Grouper(Juvenile)-Palweys Island, South Carolina This was a species I was not expecting to see anytime soon, and a size class I never thought I would encounter. Based on the size of this individual(about 2 inches long when caught back in October), It was likely only 4 months old at most. Not only did I catch this one, but I caught another one the very next week off an oyster bar in a tidal creek while looking for Fundulus. I probably should have bought a lottery ticket... The Atlantic goliath grouper or itajara, also known as the jewfish, is a large saltwater fish of the grouper family found primarily in shallow tropical waters among coral and artificial reefs at depths from 5 to 50 m.
