Common Periwinkle - Littorina littorea
A common winkle along the Maine coast. It had a blunt spire, pale columella, and was about 20-25 mm long. Periwinkles are vegetarians and can withstand long periods of time without food or water.
This one was underwater in this photo and had a lot of its body outside of its shell. I don't know what it was doing, but it was moving around and seemed fine.
Habitat: Low tide zone

The common periwinkle or winkle is a species of small edible whelk or sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc that has gills and an operculum, and is classified within the family Littorinidae, the periwinkles.
