  1. Awesome!! Do you remember how many were in the roost? I see 5 in the photo, I think. Posted 5 years ago
    1. Oh, there were a lot more than that :D
I counted about 30 when I took the photos. They've been coming here, in the same spot, every winter for more than 10 years. I heard there were at least 60 at one time.

      1. Wow, do you know why they come there? Posted 5 years ago
        1. I just read an article about this, from 10 years ago. An expert said that they probably found it to be a safe place to spend the winter. It's between some blocks of flats, so they're pretty well protected from the winds. They feed on mice, which they can probably find pretty easily in the city. There are also 3 parks not too far from their spot, maybe they might find some food there. Posted 5 years ago
          1. Thanks for elaborating, I've never heard of mass owl gatherings! Posted 5 years ago

  2. Fantastic! I am impressed and envious. Would love to see in person. Posted 5 years ago
    1. They look pretty cute :) I wish I had a better zoom lens.
Apparently, 5 or 6 of them settled here in 2009 and a couple of years later there were already about 50 of them :-O

      1. Very interesting. Was wondering if they are noisy? Our common owls, Barred and Great Horned, can make a lot of noise. All of those owls must make quite the sight to see. Posted 5 years ago
        1. No, apparently they're not especially noisy.
I don't live in their neighborhood, so I haven't seen them take off at night. If they all take flight at once, that would be quite a sight, indeed.

          1. That would be a sight! I wonder if they do “cooperative hunting” of if it is a solitary function? Posted 5 years ago

The long-eared owl is a medium-sized species of owl with an extensive breeding range. The species breeds in many areas through Europe and the Palearctic, as well as in North America. This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, of the family Strigidae, which contains most extant species of owl.
