  3. From today's Facebook post:

The king vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) is unmistakable. Unlike other vultures, the king is mostly white with a black tail and wing tips. It has a bald, brightly colored head and neck, and a bright orange wattle, called a caruncle, on its beak. The king vulture ranges from southern Mexico to Argentina. It is, of course, a scavenger, which is an enormously important job in nature. King vultures feast on carrion, thus fulfilling an ecological niche in which they dispose of the rotting remains of carcasses and prevent the spread of disease. So, not only are they gorgeous, but they also provide a crucial service to the ecosystem. {Spotted in Costa Rica by JungleDragon user, Minor Torres} #JungleDragon #Kingvulture #Sarcoramphuspapa

The king vulture is a large bird found in Central and South America. It is a member of the New World vulture family Cathartidae. This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. It is the only surviving member of the genus "Sarcoramphus", although fossil members are known.
