Pines of Rome Ottorino Respighi&#039;s wonderful symphonic poem &#039;Pines of Rome&#039; has been a favourite of mine for many a year and in 2013, I got to see the real thing when visiting Italy&#039;s capital city. <br />

Commonly known as Stone Pine, they are unlike other pines, in that they grow their foliage in clumps, held aloft on angled branches to resemble an umbrella. Their nuts are edible and are included in such dishes as pesto and baklava. <br />

The Stone Pine , also called Italian Stone Pine, Umbrella Pine and Parasol Pine, is a tree from the pine family. The tree is native to the Mediterranean region, occuring in Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Levant.
