
Common Reed - Phragmites americanus
Phragmites americanus is a wetland grass with a feathery plume at the tip of a tall, leafy stem. Originally, it was classified as a subspecies of Phragmites australis. This photo shows what it looks like when dry/in winter. When young it is purplish:
