Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) Midden Red squirrels are scatter hoarders with numerous small caches. You will often see piles of midden (food leftovers) near the locations of caches. <br />

They are conifer specialists and chew off the individual cone scales in order to get the seeds. They start at the bottom of the cone and work their way up. This midden looks like the remains of a white pine cone.<br />
