Bluegill Sunfish-Pawleys Island, South Carolina Pictured here is probably one of the most recognizable North American natives, With a natural range spanning much of the the eastern US, and introduced populations across the entire country, most people who have spent a casual day fishing at their city park or local lake have encountered these fish. As a testament to how aggressive they can be, this fish has an obvious crescent shaped bite out of it's lower caudal fin lobe, likely from another bluegill excited by the commotion. 1. Really cool to have a photo of the species with such extraordinary detail. Really getting a piranha vibe from the look of it. Posted 5 years ago
    1. There's a couple different subspecies found in the area this one came from, this one being the native strain called the Northern Bluegill (L.m. macrochirus). I'll post a photo of the other sub-species for comparsion; It's often referred to as the Coppernose or Florida Bluegill (L.m. purpurescens), and has been widely distributed outside of its native range of Peninsular Florida Posted 5 years ago

The Bluegill is a species of freshwater fish sometimes referred to as bream, brim, or copper nose. It is a member of the sunfish family Centrarchidae of the order Perciformes. It is native to North America and lives in streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds. It is commonly found east of the Rockies. It usually hides around, and inside, old tree stumps and other underwater structures. It can live in either deep or very shallow water, and will often move back and forth, depending on the time of day or.. more
