
Moriche Palm, Mauritia flexuosa
The Moriche Palm found over much of South America in wet areas and swamps. The Warao people who when 1st seen by Europeans led to the country Venezuela being called Venezuela because their stilt house villages reminded the Europeans of Venice have many, many uses for the tree including making baskets and hammocks from this key species. It grows in and near swamps and other wet areas in tropical South America. It has been reported from Trinidad, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
''Mauritia flexuosa'', a tree, can reach up to 35 m in height. The large leaves form a rounded crown. The flowers are yellowish and appear.. more
