Wood Ear - Auricularia angiospermarum
Check out the insect wing and leg peeking over the top of the fruiting body! Sadly, I didn't notice it while in the woods. I wonder who is hiding back there?!
Until recently, the North American species of Wood Ear was considered to be Auricularia auricula-judae. However, research has shown that Auricularia auricula-judae is not endemic to North America.
Habitat: Growing on rotting wood
Similar species: Auriculariales
