False Russula (Hygrophorus Russula)
Okay I must admit that I was fooled by these mushrooms. I have gotten rusty in IDing since I haven't done much mushrooming in the past 6-8 months! I was desperately trying to find a Russula or Lactarius/Lactifluus that matched these to no avail. Turns out they are big ole fakers!
Growing beneath leaf litter in a dense mixed forest near oak and hickory trees.
KOH on cap --light olive/gray/brown.
Flavor/Odor--indistinct.
Notes--Red/pink edges on young gills. Pink/purple staining on older gills. No latex present.
