European or Mediterranean Parrotfish – Sparisoma cretense (female) In Spanish is known as &quot;la vieja&quot; (Old lady) and this is the female phase. I call it phase because females eventually become males, typical for parrotfishes.       Thanks! They were on my list to photograph in the Canary Islands! They have very distinctive colors..almost like the Spanish Flag! But they are called "La Vieja" meaning the Old Lady because the male is grey and less pretty. I don't know why the name is in female terms, though :-D Posted 3 years ago

The Mediterranean parrotfish

The Mediterranean parrotfish is a species of parrotfish found at depths up to 50 m along rocky shores in the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic, from Portugal south to Senegal. It is generally common, but uncommon or rare in the northwestern Mediterranean and in the Adriatic Sea.
