    1. Thanks! It was actually perched on the ground in a field by the road when I first saw it, and then it hovered very low for a good long while, looking for its next meal!
      This is a true rarity in France (where I've never seen it), but here it's nearly as common as the common buzzard!

The rough-legged buzzard or rough-legged hawk is a medium-large bird of prey. It is found in Arctic and Subarctic regions of North America, Europe, and Russia during the breeding season and migrates south for the winter.
