  1. Having seen these guys multiple times in Maine, it was nice to encounter them again, this time in their winter plumage, on the European side of the Atlantic!
    They really are delightful, and some of the easiest alcids to see, as they are often hang out in marinas, unlike their more pelagic relatives.

The black guillemot or tystie is a medium-sized alcid. Their breeding habitat is rocky shores, cliffs and islands on northern Atlantic coasts in eastern North America as far south as Maine, and in western Europe as far south as Ireland.They are one of the few birds to breed on Surtsey, Iceland a new volcanic island.
