The barred rail is a species of bird in the rail family Rallidae. The species was formerly placed in the genus "Rallus" and is often placed in the genus "Hypotaenidia"; for example that is the genus used by the IUCN and Handbook of the Birds of the World. It is closely related to the Okinawa rail and the New Britain rail.
