Double-barred finch - Taeniopygia bichenovii Just like we used to feed wild birds during winter in Germany , in Australia especially in the state of Queensland the drought conditions are so severe that many people put out seeds and fresh water for the birds. The seed feeding birds are regular visitors but the insectivorous birds have a hard time as the insect populations are drastically reduced. We are only 3 weeks into our spring and temperatures are already often around 35 c . There is no green grass or wildflowers at all and it looks as if everything will die. The Double-barred Finch is an estrildid finch found in dry savanna, tropical dry grassland and shrubland habitats in northern and eastern Australia. They are sometimes referred to as Bicheno's Finch; and also as Owl Finch, owing to the dark ring of feathers around their faces.
