Dogwood Spittlebug Nymph - Clastoptera proteus
Spittlebug nymphs use their mouthparts to suck amino acids out of plant sap. The nymphs excrete excess sap from their anus, and thus create masses of frothy "spit" by pumping air into the sugary, sticky liquid. So, they basically produce butt spit.
Habitat: Dogwood (Cornus sp.)
**In hindsight, I probably should have pulled the insect out of the spit for a photo since it isn't documented on JD, but I didn't want to disturb it.
