Mixed Forest, Northwestern Connecticut
This was the location of my morning hike today. It's a *little* rocky. It's an exhausting hike, but is one of my favorite forests in Connecticut. The forest has lots of lichen, moss, eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), and oak (Quercus sp.). It's very rocky and hilly with plenty of nooks for fox and other animals to hide. Creatures common to these woods include squirrels, chipmunks, turkey, gray and red fox, deer, black bear, bobcat, opossum, coyote, porcupine, and skunks, plus a variety of frogs, snakes, turtles, and salamanders. There have even been moose sightings on occasion - the most recent being last week!
