The Black Skimmer is a tern-like seabird, one of three very similar birds species in the skimmer family. It breeds in North and South America. Northern populations winter in the warmer waters of the Caribbean and the tropical and subtropical Pacific coasts, but the South American races make only shorter movements in response to annual floods which extend their feeding areas in the river shallows.

This was only my third encounter with them, and by far the best. There were over 80 resting on an island in this marsh, and several were constantly on the move, making funny honking sounds, and one would occasionally pass right in front of me, zooming along like a flying hoover.
There are 3 species, which look almost identical: this is the American one, then there is one in Asia and one in Africa, both endangered. Now I really want to see the other two! Posted 6 years ago
