        1. They have different calls, which are given as the best distinguishing mark. The other things given by my book (barring on the flanks, shape, timing of molt) are too subtle for me, considering how little experience I've had with that species pair.

The long-billed dowitcher is a medium-sized shorebird. The genus name ''Limnodromus'' is Ancient Greek from ''limne'', "marsh" and ''dromos'', "racer". The specific '' scolopaceus'' is New Latin for "snipe-like", from Latin ''scolopax, scolopacis'', a snipe or woodcock. The English name is from Iroquois and was first recorded in 1841.
