  1. Right as I was photographing the snowy plovers, I noticed this fellow on the beach, the first time I've seen a red knot in the US, and not a particularly common bird in the area! Plus, I'd been looking at enough waders that I knew immediately what it was, which is a rare instance for me :p Of course, it helped that it was at extremely close range...
    (compare with the other photos on JD, with the summer plumage that gives it its name)

The red knot is a medium sized shorebird which breeds in tundra and the Arctic Cordillera in the far north of Canada, Europe, and Russia. It is a large member of the "Calidris" sandpipers, second only to the great knot. Six subspecies are recognised.
