Thread-legged Bug - Emesaya brevipennis My son spotted this insect on a picnic table, and I thought it was a walking stick until it flew away to a nearby tree. Since    Diapheromera femorata (common walkingstick) doesn&#039;t have wings. So, then I thought it was a water measurer, but was corrected on Bugguide - it is in fact a thread-legged bug (Emesaya brevipennis). It was about 4-5 cm long.<br />

Thread-legged Bug - Emesaya brevipennis

My son spotted this insect on a picnic table, and I thought it was a walking stick until it flew away to a nearby tree. Since Diapheromera femorata (common walkingstick) doesn't have wings. So, then I thought it was a water measurer, but was corrected on Bugguide - it is in fact a thread-legged bug (Emesaya brevipennis). It was about 4-5 cm long.

''Emesaya brevipennis'' is a New World species of assassin bug in the subfamily Emesinae. There are three subspecies, all of which occur in North America north of Mexico.
