  1. Goodbye California!
After a fantastic 12 day trip, this was my sendoff: a new species, which had eluded me up and down the coast, literally on the beach over which planes take off at LAX!
And I'd imagined that if I did manage to see a snowy plover, it would be as a noticeably small blob in the middle of a distant flock of waders. Instead, I had 45 of them, on a deserted beach, and since it was early morning and they were still quietly resting in the sand, I was able to get really close!
    Until next time!

The snowy plover is a small wader in the plover bird family. It breeds in Ecuador, Peru, Chile, the southern and western United States and the Caribbean. Long considered to be a subspecies of the Kentish plover, it is now known to be a distinct species.
