    1. According to Bug Guide the species epithet "unijuga" means "one yoke" with "yoke" somehow referring to marriage.

      "UNIJUGA: from the Latin "unis" (one) + "jugalis" (pertaining to a yoke; matrimonial); translates to the common name [Once-married] but has no particular significance. The common names given to species of Catocala are often fanciful and arbitrary."

The once-married underwing is a moth of the family Erebidae. It is found from Newfoundland west to south central British Columbia, south to Kentucky and Missouri in the east, Colorado and Utah in the west.
