Common Fungus Moth Caterpillar - Metalectra discalis I found this caterpillar on a rotting log, no doubt in search of fungi to snack on. I put it on a leaf so I could get a shot of it, and then returned it to its home.<br />

I found this caterpillar on a rotting log, no doubt in search of fungi to snack on. I put it on a leaf so I could get a shot of it, and then returned it to its home.

    1. The details make it so pretty, I think. It was so small that I could barely make out the hairs on it. And, when I touched it, it flopped sideways and fell into a U-shape. I tested this out several times and that was always its reaction. I wonder if it was imitating poop, or else pretending to faint ;P. Posted 6 years ago, modified 6 years ago

The common fungus moth is a species of moth of the family Erebidae. It is found from Quebec and Wisconsin to Maine, south to Florida, west to Texas and Missouri, north to Ontario.
