Gopher Tortoise in Okefenokee Swamp This was an interesting encounter. We saw the tortoise along the side of the road as we drove along, so we stopped. Suddenly, it appeared as it the tortoise started running towards us - as if it was a long-lost friend. My wife and I joked about it until it went a ways and then disappeared into the earth. I had not known about the burrow digging habits of this tortoise - but it made perfect sense in retrospect. 1. OH so cute! Enjoy the Okefenokee while you still can! Do you often visit Georgia?! Posted 6 years ago, modified 6 years ago
    1. Sad but true - I have been reading about the problems with attempts to start mining near there. This was actually my first time ever in Georgia, but we really enjoyed it (Okefenokee and Jekyll Island): lots of cool nature, very laid-back, and super nice people. My wife and I are considering going back soon. Do you live in Georgia? Posted 6 years ago
      1. I wrote as many letters as I could (and spread the word) about the Okefenokee, but it seems that those in power (and those with money) will always have their way. :'(

And, yes, I'm a Georgia girl! I live in NW Georgia, in the Appalachian foothills. Lots of beautiful wildlife up here too! If you ever visit again, give me a heads up and I can give you some pointers on cool locations! I'm glad you enjoyed your time here!

The gopher tortoise is a species of the "Gopherus" genus native to the southeastern United States. The gopher tortoise is seen as a keystone species because it digs burrows that provide shelter for at least 360 other animal species. They are threatened by predation and habitat destruction.
