American Alligator in the Okefenokee Swamp
A close-up of the signature creature of the Okefenokee Swamp NWR. Ever since I had read the name as a boy I had wanted to visit the mysterious-sounding Okefenokee Swamp and I was thrilled to finally have a chance to visit at the end of a business trip.
The American alligator, sometimes referred to colloquially as a gator, is a reptile endemic only to the Southeastern United States. It is one of the two living species of alligator, in the genus "Alligator", within the family "Alligatoridae". It is larger than the other extant alligator species, the Chinese alligator.
