Rock outcrop rising above a shrub carr
An outcrop of a dark igneous rock (gabbro? basalt?) forested on its summit with White Pine (Pinus strobus) and Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea). Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) is near the base and on the lower portions of the outcrop. In the foreground is a peatland that is densely covered with Sweet Gale (Myrica gale) a fragrant shrub. A stream (Ninemile Creek) flows throught the peatland. The summit's elevation is about 1,000 feet (~304 meters) above the level of Lake Superior which is 7.3 (~12 km) miles away.
