This nocturnal and tiny lemur has a relatively large range across most of western Madagascar, and is one of few lemurs not immediately endangered (91% of lemur species are endangered).

It is omnivorous, feeding mostly on fruits (over 50%) and large insects such as beetles, for which it will often come down to the forest floor. During periods of food shortages (dry season) it conserves energy using "Torpor", a physical state where body temperature is decreased. These may last hours, days or weeks, depending on the shortage.

It is mostly predated by owls, yet reproduces rapidly enough to keep population intact.

A surprising find of this well studied animal is that they don't go about their environment based on instinct or senses alone. This tiny primate actually has a mental representation of its surroundings. A map, basically. It remembers optimal escape routes, safe places on the floor to hunt insects, nesting sites, trees with dense branches for cover, etc.
The male of this species found on the same night:
1. Neat! The ears remind me of bat ears with the ridges. And, this looks like that adorable, tiny lemur from the Madagascar movie <3. Posted 4 months ago, modified 4 months ago

The gray mouse lemur, or lesser mouse lemur, is a small lemur, a type of strepsirrhine primate, found only on the island of Madagascar. Weighing 58 to 67 grams , it is the largest of the mouse lemurs , a group that includes the smallest primates in the world. The species is named for its mouse-like size and coloration and is known locally as ''tsidy'', ''koitsiky'', ''titilivaha'', ''pondiky'', and ''vakiandry''. The gray mouse lemur and all other mouse lemurs are considered cryptic species, as.. more
