    1. I don't think I've seen these before, but they were everywhere yesterday. They do not like to sit still.... I must have seen a hundred at least, but about three were stationary long enough to even try to get a photo. The Wiki makes it sound like they are only in the Rockies... but their range includes the Cascades, especially up here in Washington. The other local species P. clodius doesn't have any red spots on it's forewings. Posted 6 years ago

''Parnassius smintheus'', the Rocky Mountain parnassian or Rocky Mountain apollo, is a high-altitude butterfly found in the Rocky Mountains throughout the United States and Canada. It is a member of the snow Apollo genus of the swallowtail family . The butterfly ranges in color from white to pale yellow-brown, with red and black markings that indicate to predators it is unpalatable.
