The Puget Sound Garter Snake, Thamnophis sirtalis ssp. pickeringii.
This garter snake is our “local” garter snake. We have three different subspecies in B.C.

We met this fellow while walking back from the beach in a dense Red Alder forest. He was right beside the trail and seemed to put up with three adults plus a seven year who wants to hold the snake, a five year old that wants to tickle the snake with a found feather and me, the photographer.

The Common Garter Snake is a snake indigenous to North America. Most garter snakes have a pattern of yellow stripes on a brown or green background and their average length is about 50 cm, maximum about 125 cm.
