Isn’t this fish gorgeous!? Here’s what Zach Alley wrote about it on the Midwest Biodiversity Institute’s website:
“The Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) is a member of the sunfish family Centrarchidae, and is a frequently encountered species in many of our survey sites around the Chicago area. These fish are wetland associated, so we most commonly see them around areas of low gradient with dense vegetation. Certain sections of streams like the Des Plaines River are great places to find these beauties! Fun fact: The Pumpkinseed Sunfish has a range that extends further North than any other species of Lepomis!”
