
Toxomerus marginatus
TL: ~5 mm. This is the most common species in the NE US. It's distinguished by the unbroken yellow margin on the abdomen. Coloration in this genus is very variable: "Colors vary with overall temperature during pupation: if it was hot, the yellow/orange increases and the background becomes lighter, but if it was cold, the dark/black increases and the yellow/orange becomes darker like the background. Habitat: Open field near a disturbed deciduous forest

"Toxomerus marginatus", is a common species of hoverfly. It is found in many parts of North America. The larvae are predators of thrips, aphids, and small caterpillars. Adult feed on a wide range of flowers.
