  1. Another quick break from our regular scheduling, with the results of my weekend roadtrip chasing prairie birds in Missouri and Iowa. This was a lifer, and obviously one of the main highlights!
It's a really bizarre member of its family, completely independent from water. Instead it breeds in prairies of North America, and winters in grasslands of Argentina and Paraguay. They're very territorial and often perch up conspicuously to vocalize, or fly around intruders while calling loudly.

  2. Neat! A shorebird without the shore. We have these in CT, but they are very rare and endangered. Did you know that snails hide under the wings of upland sandpipers during migration, thus being transported to wherever the sandpipers go? Posted 6 years ago
    1. Oh no I did not know that, that's so cool! Posted 6 years ago

The upland sandpiper is a large sandpiper, closely related to the curlews . Older names are the upland plover and Bartram's sandpiper. It is the only member of the genus ''Bartramia''. The genus name and the old common name Bartram's Sandpiper commemorate the American naturalist William Bartram. The name "Bartram's sandpiper" was made popular by Alexander Wilson, who was taught ornithology and natural history illustration by Bartram.
